Ever felt like just throwing your hands up in the air and saying, “Come ON, Lord! What in the world is going on?!” Exasperated by people, circumstances, God’s insistence that he get his own way? If so, you’re not alone!
Some of the largest figures in the Bible got to that point and we get to read all about it. Moses was sick and tired of the complaining, Elijah was drained by being the only one who had faith, Jonah was fed up with God’s grace toward sinners, and Peter was stretched so thin by Jesus’ transformation of him he nearly broke down and cried.
Apprenticing with Jesus pushes you, sometimes, maybe even often, to your limit. And that’s where two amazing things happen. One, you get to see God work in new and powerful ways. Two, you grow – sometimes up, sometimes stronger.
Start your journey with us of Meltdowns in the Bible:
Moses. Read Numbers 11.
- Moses is fed up – why?
- God is pretty fed up – why?
- Good leaders need good followers. What does it take to be a good one?
What did God do that was new and powerful?
Elijah. Read 1 Kings 19. (maybe start with chapter 18)
- Elijah wants to die – why?
- Elijah feels all alone – is he?
- God has a plan larger than you. Do you need to know it to trust him?
What did God do that was new and powerful?
Jonah. Read Jonah (the whole book; it’s 4 chapters)
- Jonah refuses God – why?
- Jonah pouts – why?
- Is God nuts for being gracious to really evil people? (The Assyrians were!)
What did God do that was new and powerful?
Peter. Read Mark 14:66-72, John 21:15-22
- Peter was damaged. What did Jesus do about this?
- Peter got his feelings hurt. What did Jesus do about this?
- Peter tried to get Jesus to focus on someone else. Did it work?
